Saint Petersburg State University of Veterinary Medicine is the oldest education institution and the birthplace of higher veterinary education in Russia with more than 200 years of history. In 1808, a Veterinary department (faculty) was established at the Imperial Medical and Surgical Academy, which in 1873 was reorganized into a separate institute, in following years, into an academy, and in 2020 it received the status of a university.

Saint Petersburg State University of Veterinary Medicine is the oldest education institution and the birthplace of higher veterinary education in Russia with more than 200 years of history. In 1808, a Veterinary department (faculty) was established at the Imperial Medical and Surgical Academy, which in 1873 was reorganized into a separate institute, in following years, into an academy, and in 2020 it received the status of a university. Under the supervision of leading scientists, 14 scientific schools are successfully developing at the university, 7 of which are included in the register of leading scientific schools in Russia.
Many years of research and educational work have allowed the creation of 8 museums at the university, the exhibits of which are excellent visual material for deepening and consolidating the theoretical knowledge of the students. The museum owns anatomical material from the largest to the smallest representatives of the fauna. The Museum of Pathological Anatomy is one of the leading in the world and is protected by UNESCO. One of the leading structural divisions of the University is its fundamental library. To date, its funds include 234,000 copies.
