Saint Petersburg State University of Veterinary Medicine
In 1808, a Veterinary department (faculty) was established at the Imperial Medical and Surgical Academy, which in 1873 was reorganized into a separate institute, in following years, into an academy, and in 2020 it received the status of a university.
Currently, the following areas of professional training are being implemented at the university:
- Veterinary Medicine — training of specialists in the field of Veterinary Medicine (veterinarians).
- Veterinary and Sanitary Expertise — training of specialists in the field of veterinary inspection, organization, and management of veterinary activities. It is these specialists who are responsible for the safety and quality of animal and plant-based products.
- Biology — graduates of the program are engaged in the study and assessment of the state of animal and plant components of ecosystems and the biosphere, protection of these objects, develop regulatory documents in this area, are engaged in expedition work and laboratory research.
- Aquatic bioresources and aquaculture is the most recent and promising program. The objects of professional activity of the graduates are ecosystems of natural and artificial bodies of water, technical processes of artificial reproduction and cultivation of aquatic organisms, and equipment of aquaculture enterprises.
Additional professional training and advanced training are conducted in more than 30 programs.
The university offers postgraduate courses in the following areas: Veterinary Medicine, Animal Technology and Biological Sciences.
Under the supervision of leading scientists, 14 scientific schools are successfully developing at the university, 7 of which are included in the register of leading scientific schools in Russia.
Many years of research and educational work have allowed the creation of 8 museums at the university, the exhibits of which are excellent visual material for deepening and consolidating the theoretical knowledge of the students. The museum owns anatomical material from the largest to the smallest representatives of the fauna. The Museum of Pathological Anatomy is one of the leading in the world and is protected by UNESCO. One of the leading structural divisions of the University is its fundamental library.To date, its funds include 234,000 copies.
Students master practical professional skills in the university clinics: surgical, therapeutic, obstetric, gynecological. The educational process at the university is provided by professional personnel, including academicians from the Academy of Sciences, doctors, and Candidates of Sciences, professors and associate professors.
A special department which includes an innovative research medical and diagnostic center coordinates the scientific activity. The center also has a clinic for small pets. The clinic conducts scientific research, testing of modern techniques, development of the latest directions in the field of veterinary medicine. The center also has its own laboratories: a laboratory for the study of brucellosis, tuberculosis and campylobacteriosis, laboratory for the study of protozoa, clinical and biochemical laboratory.
Student life
Student life does not consist only of studying. The university has an active Student Council and Student Committee, which, together with the university administration, organize extracurricular activities for students: excursions, famous theater plays, trips to the most interesting museums of Saint Petersburg and other cultural, entertainment and sports events.
University students actively participate in sports, choreography, theater, and music competitions. All international students are provided with a place in a comfortable hostel.
