The flagship of maritime education, as the University is deservedly called, prepares professional captains, mechanics, navigators, electricians, engineers, as well as specialists for ship repair and shipbuilding companies, maritime and inland ports, managers, and lawyers for the maritime and inland shipping sectors. In addition to that, Admiral Makarov State University of Maritime and Inland Shipping is the only university in Russia that trains specialists to keep watch on nuclear-powered icebreakers.
The university has successfully passed the international accreditation of IMarEST (UK) — the most reputable international organization of marine engineers and scientists. International accreditation is not only an indicator of the prestige of the university, but also a criterion for the applicants when choosing the university to apply. This is a sign of quality and compliance of the educational programs with international standards.
The basic knowledge in the most important academic disciplines is successfully complemented by the relevant areas of professional nautical knowledge.
Educational process at the University meets the state educational standards and norms of the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers.

- the strongest teaching staff. More than 85% of the university's faculty members have PhD degrees. The scientific and teaching staff includes honored scientists of Russia, the president of the Russian Transport Academy, honorary workers of the maritime and inland fleet. Thanks to the highly professional work of the teaching staff, the university was awarded the Gold Medal at the “European Quality” competition in the nomination 100 Best Russian Universities (out of 1,278);

When training the specialists in the maritime field, the University pays great attention to the practice of the acquired knowledge. The university owns 10 yachts and the legendary frigate MIR, the fastest sailing ship on the planet.
The university regularly hosts international conferences and workshops on maritime industry, education, and science.
Admiral Makarov State University of Maritime and Inland Shipping cooperates with almost all major Russian companies associated with the sea, including Rosneft, Rosmorport, North-Western Shipping Company, Russian Maritime Register of Shipping, Transas Navigator, Unity of Marine Surveyors, Transport Union of the North-West, Russian Chamber of Shipping union, Central Marine Research and Design Institute and many others.
One of the world's largest seaports, the seaport of Saint Petersburg, is located next to the university, which allows students to get acquainted with the organization of maritime shipping in practice and to feel the spirit of their future profession.
The university awards graduates a diploma of the Russian state standard which certifies the receipt of higher education and indicates the degree/qualification and specialty received.

Admiral Makarov State University of Maritime and Inland Shipping is located in the maritime capital of Russia — Saint Petersburg. It was in this city that the Russian Navy was founded, famous traditions were established and the history of Russian navigation started.
Saint Petersburg is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. The historic center of the city is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. Saint Petersburg was founded in 1703 by the Russian Emperor Peter the Great. For 200 years, the city was the capital of Russia. The best of culture and the most progressive of science worlds was here, in Saint Petersburg. Today it remains the cultural, educational and maritime capital of Russia.
Summer in Saint Petersburg is the time of white nights. This is a natural phenomenon of the northern parts of the globe. The sun remains visible practically all day long. Nights are so bright, that you can easily read a book sitting on a bench by a beautiful embankment. During this period the city never sleeps: excursions, romantic dates, walks, and conversations with friends, amazing views of the opened draw-bridges and the great Neva River. Saint Petersburg, being internationally recognized as one of the most beautiful cities in the world, is visited annually by about 8 million tourists, which is almost twice the population of the city.

- join SDK and Balance dance groups, the Gulfstream cheerleading group, the Vocalist vocal studio, the brass band, the cadet choir, the Sea Wolves ensemble, the Baltic Seagulls drumming team, etc.;
- try yourself as an editor or reporter at the Vestnik journalism studio, which publishes a student newspaper and runs an independent news channel;
- sign up for football, basketball, volleyball, wrestling, boxing, or table tennis classes. Go to the gym, shooting range or swimming pool;
- join the racing and cruising team (the university has 10 cruiser and racer yachts), participate in regattas, naval pentathlon and rowing competitions. University students annually win prizes in various city sports competitions, as well as the competitions on regional and international level.
